American Silver Eagles

In 1986 the United States Mint started minting modern bullion coins consisting of the American Silver Eagle and the American Gold Eagle.  They come in proof and uncirculated condition and have been issued each year since 1986.  The coins are legal tender and they come as $1 (1 oz Silver) $5 (1/10 oz gold), $10 (1/4 oz gold), $25 (1/2 gold) oz, and $50 (1 oz gold). The design on the obverse is the Lady Liberty and the reverse is the Eagle soaring above a nest. More over, these coins are guaranteed to contain the stated amount of silver or gold by the United States government. The American Silver Eagles are minted at the West Point, Philadelphia, and San Francisco mints.

Proof  Coins

The American Proof Silver Eagle has been issued every year since 1986 with the exception of 2009. The proof finish is a mirror-like finish on the actual coin.  The Proof Silver Eagle comes in a 1 ounce size.  They come in a plastic capsule with a velvet box and a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the United States Mint.  In 2006, 2011, 2012, and 2013 the US Mint issued a reverse proof coin in special Anniversary Sets.

Bullion Grade

The Bullion grade American Silver Eagle comes in 1 oz size with a legal tender or $1. They have a fineness of .999 Silver.  The 1 oz is the most common silver coin in the United States. It comes in tubes of 20 with a green top.  A monster box is a large plastic container that contains 25 tubes of silver eagles or 500 ounces.  The United States mint has produced over 500 million of the 1 oz silver eagles.  Generally, they are purchased for investment, speculation of increasing silver value, or as a hedge against inflation.

Burnished Coins

In 2006 the US Mint started making the uncirculated American Silver Eagles.  They are produced at the West Point mint and they bear the “W” mint mark on the reverse of the coin.  They are struck on special burnished blanks.  The come in a blue box with a certificate of authenticity.

Other Silver Eagle Sets

The US Mint produces other silver eagle sets to commemorate different events.  There is a 1996 10th Anniversary 5 coin set.  In addition, a set in 2006 was made to commemorate the 20th Anniversary.  The was a 3 piece set.  The 2011 Silver Eagle 5 piece set was produced for the 25th Anniversary.  Because of the popularity of the 2011 set, the U.S. Mint also produced a 2012 2 piece set and a 2013-w 2 piece set.  More recently the U.S. mint came out with a 75th Anniversary of WWII Proof Silver Eagle with a special privy mark on the silver eagle.
