$20 Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin

The $20 Liberty Head Gold Coin was first minted in 1850 by the United States Mint.  It is also called the “Double Eagle”.  It was minted at the Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints until 1907. Interestingly, these gold coins were used in circulation as money during that time period.

Types

There are 3 types of the $20 Liberty Head Gold Coin. The 1850-1866 (Type 1) coins do not have the motto “in god we trust” on the reverse side of the coin.  The Coins Minted 1866-1876 (Type 2) have the motto “in god we trust” and “TWENTY D” on the reverse of the coin. The Coins Minted 1877-1907 (Type 3) have the motto and “TWENTY DOLLARS” on the Reverse. Many people think these coins have one ounce of gold similar to the modern 1 ounce American Gold Eagle. However, each coin contains .9675 ounce of gold.  It is 90% content of gold or 21.6 karats and is alloyed with copper.  It has a diameter of 34 mm and a thickness of 2.4 mm. The coin was designed by James B. Longacre.

The Austrian Gold Ducat is a gold coin made in Austria that was used for trade until the 20th Century.  The word ducat comes from Latin and means duke’s coin.  The Austrian 4 ducat has a fine gold content of .4430 of an ounce and is 98.675% Gold or 23.68 Karats.  It has a diameter of 39 mm and a thickness of .9 mm.  The Austrian 1 ducat gold coin has a fine gold content of .1107 of an ounce and is 98.675% Gold or 23.68 Karats.  It has a diameter of 19.6 mm and a thickness of .8 mm.  These coins are thin compared to other gold coins.  They are often in uncirculated or almost uncirculated condition as well as look proof-like.  The ducat is unique in that it has a gold purity of 23.68% rather than the gold coin standard of 24k (99.9%), 22k (91.6%), or 21.6k (90%).

At California Gold and Silver Exchange we use our XRF Analyzer and Sigma Metalytics Tester to verify your Austrian Ducat gold coins. We have purchased many of these gold coins and are very familiar with them.  Bring in your Austrian Gold Ducat today and walk out with cash in your hand.

The Austrian Hungary Gold Corona is a popular gold coin with investors and collectors alike.  It contains .9802 ounce of pure gold alloyed with copper.  It is 90% gold or 21.6 karats.  The 100 Corona has a diameter of 37 mm and a thickness of 2.3 mm.  The Austria 100 Corona features Franz Joseph I  on the obverse and the reverse is a crowned double eagle, (middle coat of arms), with the date at the bottom.  These coins were produced from 1908 to 1914.

The 100 Corona is the most popular, but they did also produce the 20 Corona and the 10 Corona.  The 20 Corona has a fine gold content of .1960 troy ounce.  It is 90% gold or 21.6 karats.  The 20 Corona gold coin has a diameter of 21 mm and a thickness of 1.2 mm.  The 10 Corona gold coin has a fine gold content of .0980.  It is 90% gold or 21.6 karats and is alloyed with copper.  The diameter of the coin is 19 mm and the thickness of the coin is 1.4 mm.

In the 1960s, the Austrian Government made a restrike of the Coin with the 1915 date (1908 on the Hungarian version) to sell to collectors in the United States.   During this time it was still illegal for Americans to own gold bullion.  However, they were allowed to own coins for collection defined as coins dated before 1933.  This was a way for Americans to buy gold bullion, and the 100 Corona was very popular.  When restrictions were lifted the popularity changed to South African Krugerrand in 1974.

The American Gold Buffalo was first introduced in 2006 and is a 24-Karat pure gold bullion coin. The United States had never issued a 24 Karat gold coin prior to its release. The design is similar to the buffalo nickel issued between 1913-1938. The front of the coin has a side profile of a Native American Indian, the year it was issued as well as the word “Liberty “on the top right side.   while the reverse has the American Bison pictured on a pile of grass. The coin is 1 ounce of 99.99% fine 24 karat gold.  In 2008 only, the U.S. Mint issued the $5 (1/10 ounce), $10 (1/4 ounce), and the $25 (1/2 ounce). The coins are struck at the West Point mint in New York. The proof coin comes in a velvet box with a certificate of authenticity.  The proof coin also has the “W” mint mark. The U.S. Mint has minted over 2.3 million of this coin.

The South Africa Krugerrand is a gold coin first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint.   The Krugerrand gold coin was named for the former South African President Paul Kruger and rand, the South Africa unit of currency. During the 1970’s the Krugerrand was the most popular gold coin on the world market.  They even produced six million coins in 1978.  They have produced over 50 million ounces of gold Krugerrands since starting production in 1967.  The success of the South African Gold Krugerrand encouraged other countries to start issuing their own gold coins.  This included the Canadian Maple Leaf in 1979, the Australian Nugget in 1981, the Chinese Panda in 1982 and the American Gold Eagle in 1986. Some countries did not allow the Krugerrands to be imported during the apartheid government in South Africa.

The Krugerrand is 1 ounce of pure gold alloyed with copper.  It has a total weight of 1.0909 ounces or 33.933 grams.  It has a diameter of 32.6 mm and a thickness of 2.84 mm. The one ounce is the most common, but it does come in ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, and 1/10 ounce.  From 1961-1983 the South Africa Mint also produced the 2 Rand and 1 Rand gold coins.  The 2 Rand has .2355 ounce of gold and the 1 Rand has .1178 ounce of gold. The South African Mint also makes the Krugerrand in a Proof coin, however these are less popular.
